Een bijzonder inititatief en waarschijnlijk het eerste in zijn soort. De staat Utah kent een Open High School die zich uitsluitend baseert op Open Educational Resources (OER).

The mission of the Open High School of Utah is to provide Utah students with an excellent education through an online, virtual environment that will help them achieve their full academic and social potential.

The core philosophy of the Open High School of Utah is that education is a universal human right and that the most effective education is hands-on, service-oriented, and available to anyone. Because of this philosophy, OHSU is committed to using open educational resources – educational materials that can be freely and legally copied, changed, and shared.

Deze charter school  vraagt om ieders medewerking. De eerste fase in de opstart bestaat namelijk uit het inventariseren van beschikbare open educational resources. Deze kunnen op de speciale wiki worden ‘aangemeld’ onder vermelding van het type, de bron (URL) en de licentie.

Natuurlijk heeft deze Open High School ook kenmerken van reguliere scholen. Het is de bedoeling om na de inventarisatiefase de verschillende OE-resources te verbinden met het curriculum (state curriculum standards) en de leerdoelen. Daarna wordt bekeken welke resources er nog ontbreken om deze vervolgens zelf te gaan ontwikkelen. Tenslotte is het ook de bedoeling om passende, afgestemde toetsing te ontwikkelen.  

OHSU offers a full college preparatory program and the opportunity for students to earn both a high school diploma and an associate’s degree from the Utah State University, emphasizing computer science.

Voor de didactiek van deze virtuele school wordt gebruik gemaakt van het zogenaamde service-learning.

service-learning is a form of experiential education where learning occurs through a cycle of action and reflection as students work with others through a process of applying what they are learning to community problems and, at the same time, reflecting upon their experience as they seek to achieve real objectives for the community and deeper understanding and skills for themselves.

Wat service-learning inhoudt wordt duidelijk door onderstaand voorbeeld:

For example, if school students collect trash out of an urban streambed, they are providing a service to the community as volunteers; a service that is highly valued and important. When school students collect trash from an urban streambed, then analyze what they found and possible sources so they can share the results with residents of the neighborhood along with suggestions for reducing pollution, they are engaging in service-learning.

Het leren staat dus altijd in dienst van enerzijds de student en anderzijds een bepaalde vorm van dienstverlening zoals maatschappelijke dienstverlening.

Of je een volledig onderwijsprogramme op die manier zou kunnen inrichten en uitvoeren is maar de vraag. Maar op onderdelen zal het zeker mogelijk zijn om deze verbinding te maken. Ook in het MBO worden bepaalde projecten die studenten uitvoeren vaak verbonden aan maatschappelijke organisaties en doelen. Wat nog onduidelijk is hoe zaken als de intake, inschrijving, begeleiding en dergelijke worden vormgegeven. Toch zaak om dit initiatief via de weblog van David Wiley in de gaten te houden.
